February 2013 Principal's Message

This deep freeze we’ve been living in makes it hard to believe that January actually flew by as quickly as it did! The students have been outstanding during the numerous indoor recesses or colder than usual outdoor recesses. The teachers have done well surviving this as well! Just a reminder to bundle up your children every day as they will be sent outside as long as the weather does not drop below -25 Celsius with the wind chill.

Our basketball season has begun. Congratulations to both the Boys and Girls teams who did very well at showing great teamwork, sportsmanship and respect at the Thom Feeder School Tournament. Awesome work Panthers! I would also like to thank Mr. Barnes and Miss Bayda for coaching these teams. Coaching elementary school teams is voluntary. Our goal as a school is to provide players the opportunity for team and skill building. Equal playing time and good sportsmanship precede winning. If you have questions or concerns about coaching or referee decisions made during a game, please contact the coach by email or phone the day following a game and not on the court. It is all of our responsibilities to model good sportsmanship for our students.

I am very excited about our upcoming Parent Institute taking place on Wednesday, February 20th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. here at the school. Our theme is “Big Ideas in Math and Explore +4”. If you have been wondering how math has changed since we were in elementary school and why it has changed then this will be an informative evening for you. I am pleased to have Regina Public School’s Supervisor of Numeracy as our guest speaker this evening as well as provide parents the opportunity to get into a classroom and see first-hand how the Explore +4 structure works in a balanced Numeracy classroom. Watch for an invitation to this event in your child’s agenda next week.

I would like to thank all parents and community members who have attended our assemblies. We are very proud of our Circle of Courage award recipients as well as the students who are taking turns hosting the assemblies each month. This continues to be a positive way to develop speaking and leadership skills. You can see our monthly Circle of Courage award recipients on our homepage.

Finally, we welcome back Mrs. Simons who returned from maternity leave this week. Mrs. Simons will be teaching half-time mornings in the grade 4/5 classroom. We are so happy to have her back on the Pawson team!

    January Principal's Message

Happy New Year! I hope everyone was able to relax and spend time with family and friends. We are excited to be back at school and back in a routine.

I would like to take an opportunity to thank the Ruth Pawson School Community Council for all of the hard work they have put into planning events and fundraisers so far this year. Thanks to their efforts, the Pawson students are provided with resources to help them learn and meet the goals of our Learning Improvement Plan. Your hard work is greatly appreciated! I encourage all parents to come out to an SCC meeting. They are held on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 in our school’s resource center. Due to a Regina Public School Division SCC forum taking place on January 15th, our next SCC meeting will be held on January 22 at 6:30 in our school library. Free child care is provided.

Ruth Pawson is going GREEN! Mrs. Mehl does an excellent job at creating our school newsletter; however, the amount of paper and ink cartridges these monthly newsletters consume truly takes a toll on our environment. This is the last PAPER COPY of the school newsletter that we will be sending home. Starting in February, our school newsletter will be posted on the website for you to download and/or print. Our school website is http://ruthpawson.rbe.sk.ca/. You can find our school newsletters under the public link titled School Newsletters.

2013 is going to be a fantastic year!
