Celebrating the Arts

Our spring presentation, "Celebrating the Arts" will take place on Tuesday, April 23rd starting at 6:30 in the Ruth Pawson Gymnasium.

The Ministry of Education Saskatchewan Curriculum Document recognizes four strands in Arts Education: Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art. Students are involved in experiences throughout the year that meet the learning outcomes in these four areas. Often the work done by children is worthy of sharing thus, our Celebrating the Arts evening!

I would like you to encourage your children to get involved. A presentation is only as successful as the level of participation and energy that the children put into it. The various Arts Education strands will be showcased at different grade levels from grade 1 to 8 on this evening and students have been asked to participate. I know that you will be entertained with our program, and I hope to see many of your children involved.

An invitation was sent home today with the youngest or only of each family. Please return the bottom portion of this invitation for your family so we know how many refreshments to prepare. You can also download the invitation in the document library on our school website: ruthpawson.rbe.sk.ca

Thank you to East Side Marios for sponsoring this event!

The Grade 8 class will be holding a Toonie Raffle in order to raise funds for the Grade 8 Farewell.

2013-2014 School Calendars

Posted below are the Elementary School Calendars for 2013-2014

Red Cross Day of Pink, April 10th

Pink Shirts were delivered to students who ordered them today. It appears there was a manufacturer switch so some of the Youth Sizes may appear smaller or different than you ordered. This was an issue with Red Cross and not with Ruth Pawson school. We simply distributed what was ordered. In any case, we believe that every child who ordered a pink shirt will have one to wear this Wednesday, April 10th and the funds are going toward a great cause.

Remember to join the stand. Wear the shirt. Be the difference.

Thank you for your participation.

April Principal's Message

March has been a very productive and positive month! Thank you to the many parents and families that took part in the Three Way Conferences on Friday, March 22nd. We cannot stress enough how necessary your involvement and support is to your child’s success.

Once again I am in awe of the Ruth Pawson community! In three short days and by hosting a Pancake Breakfast, the students and staff along with the support of the SCC, raised $4000.00 for the Z99 Radiothon in support of the NICU at the Regina General Hospital. What a TREMENDOUS display of the spirit of Generosity! Thank you to Mrs. McMartin and the SRC for promoting this worthy cause. It sure was great fun to watch Mr. Barnes get his legs shaved at our assembly. What a great sport!

Thank you to Mr. Barnes and Miss Bayda for hosting another successful PIT tournament on March 26th. Not only did our teams do well but they displayed tremendous hospitality to our two visiting teams, Argyle and Gladys McDonald. Thank you also to the Grade 8 parents who worked the canteen.

We are saying farewell to our two University of Regina students, Ms. Thiessen and Ms. Euteneier who have been pre-interning in Mrs. Millar’s Kindergarten class this year. They have done an exceptional job and we send them best wishes in their future studies and internship.

April 10, 2013 we will join schools throughout Saskatchewan in raising awareness about the impact of bullying by wearing pink. The Canadian Red Cross Day of Pink is an initiative that provides students, staff and the larger community with the opportunity to discuss the impact of bullying and to learn how they can use their power to help create a safe and respectful school environment. On April 10, 2013, students, staff and community members wear pink shirts in solidarity to show that they are taking a stand against bullying. If you ordered a pink shirt, they will be sent home on Monday, April 8th. If you didn’t order a shirt, wear a pink shirt that you already own. The Day of Pink started in 2007 when two high school students in Nova Scotia took a stand against bullying in their school. The students asked all of their peers to wear pink to school after they heard a male classmate had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt. To continue the momentum, the Canadian Red Cross Day of Pink campaign brings together schools and communities to wear the shirt and stand together against bullying. Ruth Pawson students will participate in an Integration activity on this day and classroom teachers will also be planning lessons around respect education and anti-bullying.

While you may not believe the snow is ever going to melt, there will come a day when it will and there will be many puddles and a lot of mud. Please make sure your child has proper outdoor clothing and footwear for the muddy playground as well as indoor gym runners. Students are required to remove their outdoor shoes when entering the building.

Finally, this is a reminder that the school does not open until 8:45 a.m. therefore, students are not to arrive or be dropped off prior to this time. Students will not be supervised or permitted to enter the school building until after the 8:45 bell has rung which can get quite cold for students during some of these frigid mornings. Thank you for support on this.

Happy Easter and enjoy your spring break!

March Principal's Message

Like most other months, March is very busy at Ruth Pawson School. My calendar shows basketball tournaments, skating, swimming, speed stacking, cross-country skiing and Battle of the Books. We are also marking the end of our second term with report cards going home Friday, March 15th at 3:30. Inside the report card folder you will find an invitation to a 3-Way Goal-Setting Conference on Friday, March 22nd. Please let the school know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend the scheduled conference so we can arrange an alternate time. This will mean that students are only required to be at school for his/her meeting time with the teacher and there will be no school that day. Kindergarten students have 3-Way Goal-Setting Conferences on March 21st & 22nd so Kindergartens will have no school on both of these days.

Something special that will also be taking place this month is fundraising for the Z99 Radio-Thon in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I am very proud of the efforts Pawson’s SRC and Mrs. McMartin put into raising $3601.35 last year and hope that we are able to reach our goal of $4000.00 this year through the many exciting events the SRC has planned. I would also like to invite you to our pancake breakfast taking place on March 12th from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the Uplands Community Center. Admission is $2.00 and everyone is welcome! If you cannot attend with your child, they are still welcome to come. Just send them to school after 8:30 with their $2.00 and they will enjoy pancakes. Watch for a letter and permission form to come home this week.

On behalf of the Ruth Pawson staff I would like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to the SCC and other families who spoiled us with delicious treats, kind words, a fabulous luncheon and those who volunteered their time during Staff Appreciation week. We felt very much appreciated with each new surprise throughout the week. We are also very appreciative to the SCC who helped support our Parent Institute on February 20th and for the great turn out to this event! Your support from home greatly impacts your child’s success at school.

Ruth Pawson is such a great place to be! We look forward to seeing you here at the school for 3-Way Goal Setting conferences as well as during some of the extra-curricular activities coming up.

Happy Spring!

Mrs. L. Wotherspoon
